Pitfield Street combines the restoration of a derelict cinema with the provision of new commercial and residential accommodation.

APPROACH

Following close consultation with the local community, and planners, the scheme combines the reconstruction of the original 1914 Gaumont façade with the construction of a contemporary black-brick, green-roofed building.

DESIGN

The design consists of two distinct elements, a solid concrete ground level to accommodate the three-screen cinema, and an acoustically insulated CLT upper residential element, with a stepped western elevation providing gardens and balconies. A lightweight zinc-clad pavilion makes a modern extension to the heritage façade whilst minimising the visual impact on neighbouring buildings.

RESULT

The new Curzon cinema opened in June 2021. As well as returning an important resource to the Shoreditch community, Pitfield Street is a signature project in our research and practical application of CLT.
