The Light
On entering Hackney from the city you will pass one of the most spectacular pieces of London's heritage - the first and only remaining purpose-built electric power station in London. It was near collapse in 1999 before its transformation into The Light bar and restaurant by Waugh Thistleton.
The brick fabric on the exterior and interior of the building has been extensively cleaned, and the exterior stonework has been restored. Where elements of the existing building had been lost or were beyond repair, new elements were introduced. All replacements, however, are contemporary and complement the original structure rather than mimic it. The new elements are bold and expressive of the current purpose without overwhelming the details of the old building, creating a unique harmony.
