Northern Light in Leeds follows the success of The Light in Shoreditch, London - also designed by Waugh Thistleton. The brief asked for this red brick, former Presbyterian school to be converted into a restaurant on the ground floor and a bar and members' lounge on the first floor. A landscaped courtyard in the heart of the building links these individual spaces.
Inside, the original scale and features have been preserved; there are high vaulted ceilings; and the exposed brickwork has been cleaned. Contemporary interventions have been kept to a minimum to retain and express the vernacular of the original building. Additions are in the form of modern and durable materials. Resin treated surfaces, handcrafted solid timber furniture and leather upholstery have been used to create a luxurious and comfortable environment.
