Ealing Synagogue
The practice is building a new Synagogue and community building in Ealing, London. Our design offers a multi-functional space - providing a meeting and learning place as well as a serene place of worship. The building is, therefore, split into two elements: the worship space and the service space that includes administration, food preparation and learning.
The design is a fluid one, understanding the needs and movements of a busy synagogue. The Shul, for example, can be expanded when necessary by withdrawing a sliding partition. Alternatively, when the partition is in place, an additional meeting space is provided behind it.
We propose to use sustainable methods of construction; and to ensure that the building continues to be energy efficient, we are looking into rainwater harvesting, optimising natural ventilation and light, using high levels of insulation and, vitally, recycling materials from the existing buildings.
