Project Title
Furzey Hall Farm is a unique family home for artist Jake Chapman. Situated in the picturesque setting of Filkens in Gloucestershire, the project sees the refurbishment of a Victorian farm house, a conversion of an adjacent barn and a new-build extension linking the two existing buildings.

The expansive house has been divided into several distinct areas to meet the various different uses of a modern family. Our refurbishment of the farmhouse retains the traditional feel of country living and provides ample living and play space for the children. Sleek, modern extensions to either side of the farmhouse provide guest accommodation and an open plan kitchen and dining area. The main barn has been retained as a traditional open-plan space, providing a grand living room and a master suite. Simple, pure materials have been used confidently; the original elm trusses are retained and the stone walls are left exposed along the gable ends of the barn. The original character of the barn is juxtaposed with bold modern interventions such as the folded steel staircase.

As with all our projects, our design incorporates several environmental measures. At Furzey Farm Hall a ground source heat pump provides heating to the house and an air source heat pump heats the pool. In addition, the pool is filled with natural well water which is naturally filtered by a reed bed planted adjacent to the pool.

The project sensitively restores a traditional farmhouse and barn successfully marrying it with modern elements to deliver a unique family home.
